State policymakers and advocates are invited to a briefing on ‘refusal of health care' laws and their impact on patients, providers, and states. Federal and state refusal laws allow hospitals, health insurance plans, and individual medical providers to deny health care, information, or referrals based on political, religious, or other personal beliefs— placing those beliefs over patient health, dignity, and rights. At a moment when the Trump administration is weaponizing federal refusal laws to threaten abortion access and interfere with providers’ ability to do their jobs, this session will break down the current federal landscape and examine how refusal laws are being used against states. NWLC experts and New Hampshire Reproductive Equity Now advocate Christina Warriner Hamilton will highlight state-level strategies to protect patients’ access to health care.

Join NWLC’s State Gender Policy Collective for a briefing on fair work schedules and their role in advancing job quality, economic security, and family well-being. Over the last decade, states and localities across the country have enacted fair workweek laws to give workers more control over their work hours, greater predictability in when they work, and more stability in their weekly wages. Yet millions of workers still struggle with low-quality schedules. This session will feature Danny Schneider (The Shift Project) sharing research on the harms of unstable work schedules and the benefits of fair workweek laws; former Philadelphia City Councilmember Helen Gym speaking about the successful introduction and passage of one of the nation’s strongest fair scheduling laws; and NWLC experts sharing best practices for the next generation of fair scheduling policies.
